Most often I do this while people are talking or lecturing to me. It may seem like I am not listening, but it actually acts as a sort of white noise that allows me to focus on what is being said rather than being distracted by every movement or noise in my environment.
These paintings came at the end of a very sad time for me and probably helped me leave it behind.
